Casey Donovan says her six-year relationship with a man called Campbell was a hoax the whole time. The year-old singer reveals in her new book that her long romance with a mysterious Sydney IT professional was a fake and that "Campbell" never existed. Casey Donovan starred in the stage production of 'The Sapphires', and won Australian Idol at the age of Donovan told New Ideawhich published excerpts of the biographythat she was quickly drawn in by the mystery man on the phone.
Donovan was just 16 years old when the romance started, just after her Australian Idol win. In the book Donovan admits to a six-year telephone relationship she had with a man she knew as Campbell, who never actually existed. She never met 'Campbell', because he was really the invention of another friend, a woman known as Olga in the book. Donovan wrote that she slept with Olga at Campbell's urging and continued on with one night stands that eventually spiraled into sex addiction.
The book is her self-penned of an emotionally rocky journey in the 10 years since she won the show in She never shies from the terrible lows - her battles with weight, identity and that baffling and destructive fake relationship. We get the many meaningful highs too - her growing sense of cultural identity, acceptance from the gay community, the successful songs, nominations in the Sydney Theatre Awards, a role in The Sapphires stage play and the tremendous improvement in her own body image.
But the graphic descriptions of Donovan's online dating sexual encounters which followed that humiliating fake relationship beg another question. Did we really need to know everything? We will spare you the gory details, but let's just say the chapter called ' Now' is classic 'over-sharing' and probably should have come wrapped in plastic. It was almost an addiction I definitely had my fair share of men, but I still wanted more," Donovan writes.
Add a liberal sprinkling of anatomical slang words and most of all, variants of the verb to 'f', and you get the idea. The chapter detailing how Donovan succumbed to sex with Olga at Campbell's urging is also highly graphic. The rawness of her experiences are obviously the point, but one can't help but wonder if the story would have been at least as powerful with passages that carried more evocation of her loneliness and confusion and less pornographic writing.
It was very therapeutic as a way of getting it out of my head - the good the bad and the ugly and the indifferent. Donovan is clearly unburdening herself of shameful secrets, such as her descent towards sex addiction - from which she has recovered. We get that it's only two of 30 chapters.
But why so damn smutty in those 17 s? Donovan hasn't seen Olga for "two or three years" and did manage to confront her, albeit on the phone. Has she learned why Olga went to the lengths of pretending to pursue her as a man in order to sleep with her as a woman? Any book this juicy that involves a public figure would create a media feeding frenzy, but it's a shock that Donovan didn't see the media maelstrom coming. Of course the sordid details don't define Donovan: she's in a remarkably good place - she's secured a contract as a plus-size model, she has an engagement to sing at a runway show in Paris, is about to start a national tour and hopes to release an album later in the year.
How does she see herself? People forget it's about the music and I forgot that for a very long time. While many problems have stemmed from the early fame she found, on balance, the Idol experience was a good one, although she'd like to see record companies and TV networks "nurturing" their contestants a bit more than they do. When she saw the enormously talented but troubled Karise Eden win in she felt strong empathy for Eden.
And if Donovan could go back and give advice to her awkward year-old self on Australian Idol? I wouldn't be the person I am without the ups and the downs. I like to say 'no regrets' although there are times when I think 'why were you so stupid? She also is also touring her music between May and November. Details on caseydonovan.
